Description
Taurasi DOCG 2019
With its ruby red color and intense flavor, Taurasi is one of the many excellent products of Campania’s enogastronomic heritage. Originating from Irpinia, Taurasi holds the prestigious DOCG classification and stands out for its unique characteristics, beginning with the grape variety it is derived from.
Taurasi DOCG is made from the Aglianico grape, widely cultivated in Southern Italy but primarily found in Campania, between the provinces of Benevento and Avellino. It is believed that this grape variety was introduced by Greek settlers between the 7th and 6th centuries BC, though the origin of the name is less certain. Conversely, “Taurasi” is likely derived from the ancient Irpinian city of Taurasia, destroyed by the Romans in 268 BC, whose exact geographical location remains a topic of scholarly debate.
Characteristics
The marvel of Taurasi DOCG is evident at first sight: an intense ruby red color that tends toward garnet and develops pleasant orange hues with age. Unlike similar wines, Taurasi is particularly well-suited to long aging, thanks to its minerality and alcohol content. Another distinguishing feature is its pleasant aroma, which can vary in intensity, while on the palate, the wine is balanced and dry with a persistent aftertaste.
These exceptional qualities are the result of a meticulous production process. Hand-harvested grapes are destemmed and crushed, undergoing fermentation for 25–30 days. The wine is then aged for 18 months in barriques and an additional 12 months in the bottle.
